Setting out the centrepiece of the Brownie circle and putting it away - whatever you have at the centre of your circle, whether it is an owl, a toadstool, a magic carpet, a pool, a Brownie badge, a flag, a Brownie doll or something else, the Sixers can be responsible for setting it out and putting it away, either as a group of Sixers or on a rota between the Sixes.  If you have extra items for special occasions, then they can be responsible for remembering about these too - making sure the pool is dusted and looking it's best for the Promise ceremony, or the flag handled with suitable dignity on Thinking Day .

Six Roll Book - Sixers can be responsible for filling in the book at the start of the meeting to indicate who is present, and can update it if latecomers arrive after that.  The roll book would be used if you did a fire evacuation to make sure everyone who was at the meeting had got out of the building safely, so it is an important and responsible task.  (If you find Sixers are getting slack over filling in the book, it can be worth doing a fire drill and using the books to call the roll, making it clear to the Sixers that anyone you didn't call out wasn't here, so you wouldn't risk going into the flames to look for them.

The duties you delegate to Sixers and Seconds will vary considerably from unit to unit, depending on how you organise things within the unit - but there should be some clear duties or responsibilities, especially for the Sixer, and you should give each new Sixer details of what these are when they are appointed, so they have the chance to show their ability.  Both because it's good for them, and because it's good for you!  Possible duties could include: If there is no obvious candidate in the Six, then you can look to the other Sixes to see if they have anyone with the potential to take on the role - if so you could ask if they would be willing to move in order to take the promotion (usually the answer would be yes, but some find it difficult to leave their friends behind, so it's best if they are given a chance to think it over and decide for themselves rather than the Leaders assume the honour of promotion automatically overrules any doubts).  Another option is to either leave the vacancy for a few weeks to see who shows potential - or even leave it vacant for a longer while and have the exising Six members share any necessary duties among themselves without having anyone actually appointed as Sixer.  What you can't do, is demote someone after they have been appointed, it causes too much upset and embarassment, so take time and care over getting the right choice before you actually make an appointment. It is important to make it clear to everyone (including both the Brownies and the parents) that the Sixer post does not automaticaly go to the oldest Brownie in the Six through 'Buggins turn'!  Sure, sometimes (perhaps often) it will turn out that the next-oldest Brownie in the Six will happen to be the best candidate and will therefore get the job - but there are times when she is not the right choice, maybe she is going through a difficult phase of behaviour, or maybe she is too shy and nervous to be a good leader, or maybe she is too self-centred to naturally think of looking after others, or maybe she is too bossy to lead fairly, or maybe she is the sort of dominant character that the younger Bronwies are too scared of to work well with .  Where a vacancy occurs, it is important that the Unit Leaders look at the different personalities of the various older Brownies who could be candidates for the post, and think about who would really be the best person for the job.  It needs to be someone who is confident enough to take the lead, but who will also take the time to look after the new recruits and help them to settle in, and who will share out the Six's work fairly, and not hog the fun stuff to herself or her best pals while giving others the clearing up or boring bits as their 'share', and will set a reasonable example of behaviour to the others, not lead them astray!
